Lumix FZ38 Camera Effective Pixels: 12.1 Mega pixels
One big part of the digital camera will be the number of mega pixels it has and whether or not it will be enough for the type of photos you want to print.
Basically, mega pixels are a unit of measurement in an image. If you think of your picture as a series of dots – which it is - the more densely the dots are put together, the better your picture will look.
The number of mega pixels will determine the quality of your final photo. If you choose too few, your pictures won’t be what you want them to be. If you choose too many, you’re probably going to spending more money than you need to.
The higher the number of mega pixels the better the resolution. The higher the resolution, the larger and higher quality prints you can make. Higher quality photos take up more space on your media card, but they will give you the best prints.
For many people, this is the most difficult part of buying a digital camera. How much is enough and how much is too much? Here are a few pointers to help you along the way.
4 mega pixels or less:
• This is typically found on smaller, inexpensive cameras or cameras in combination with other devices (such as cell phones or PDA’s).
• It will be hard to make a high-quality print of any size, but these are just fine for e-mailing photos or posting photos for a personal web site.
• Cameras with this range are not recommend for family portraits or if you really need a nice-looking print.
• You can make some nice 4 x 6 prints and as large as 5 x 7 with good quality. Anything larger than that will appear blurry or distorted.
• Expect to pay £50 to £75 for the camera alone, more for a combo unit.
6 mega pixels:
• This is actually a good compromise between picture quality and low price for most casual photographers.
• You can print lovely 4x6 images, decent 5x7s and, depending on the camera, might even knock out a good 6x9 or 8x10.
• You will pay around £75 to £125.
8 mega pixels:
• You're getting nicer. These images make practically photo-lab quality 4x6s, and great 5x7s and 6x9s.
• You can print a nice 8x10 and even an 11 x 14.
• You'll typically pay about £125 to £175.
10 mega pixels:
• This will produce beautiful 8x10s, and even a nice 11x14. You may even be able to get even larger to a 16 x 20.
• With this camera, you are getting closer to professional photographer levels, and the quality shows it.
• And you'll pay the price, around £175 to £225.
12 mega pixels and up:
• Wonderful image quality, but high price tags. You can print large photos, even 11x14 or perhaps more, with satisfying results.
• There are some high-mega pixel cameras coming out with lower price tags than most, but they usually have very few features.
• Unless mega pixels are the only thing you care about (it shouldn't be), don't get a camera that sounds outrageously expensive for its mega pixel range.
• In this category, expect to pay £225 and up.

POWER O.I.S. is about twice as effective as MEGA O.I.S. at reducing low-frequency vibration-caused blur when pressing the shutter button or shooting with a slow shutter speed. So you can take beautiful night shots without blurring. Activating POWER O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Face Detection AF/AE with Face Recognition, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and AF Tracking, and the camera does all the work in the iA Mode. Face Recognition function recognizes registered persons' faces and optimizes the focus and exposure settings.
To realize the ultra high-speed AF, a number of re-engineering and improvements are made including the adaptation of higher-speed actuator, the optimization of algorism and the parallelization of software processing element. The result is ultra high speed yet accurate AF performance for users to enjoy the airy shooting that has experienced never before. The lumix fz38 also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve an ultra high-speed start-up of 1.2 seconds, a remarkable 20% decrease from previous model (FZ28).
The joystick gives the lumix fz38 its precise, full manual operation. Simply move the joystick vertically or horizontally to adjust the shutter speed, aperture or focus during manual focus. In addition, easy manual operation is possible with the lumix fz38. My Color Mode makes it easy to customize color effects to match your favor. The Advanced Scene Mode lets you quickly set the frequently used Portrait, Scenery, Sports, Night Portrait, or Close-up Modes with the mode dial. And you can adjust the aperture or shutter speed in each Creative Mode.
The lumix fz38 can record HD movie of 720P in AVCHD Lite. And a stereo microphone, featuring Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, records high quality audio. Just press the Motion Picture Button, and shooting begins. In the Creative Movie Mode, the shutter speed and aperture can be adjusted. The iA Mode can also be activated in motion picture recording. When the lumix fz38 is connected to a Panasonic VIERA via an optional mini HDMI cable, the TV's remote control unit can be used to enjoy playing back with greater convenience.

The lumix fz38 features a 27mm wide-angle 18x optical zoom f/2.8-4.4 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens in a compact body (35mm equivalent: 27-486mm). The lens unit comprises 11 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED lenses and 3 aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens. The powerful 18x zoom can also be used in motion picture recording. Furthermore, in 3-megapixel resolution, the Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 35.2x (35mm film camera equivalent: 950mm).
